This part of the web site will help guide you through our jazz program. The jazz bands that are a part of SPFHS can be seen performing throughout the community, school concerts, local competitions, and the annual music department evaluation trip.
MIDDLE SCHOOL JAZZ
Park Middle School and Terrill Middle School both have award winning jazz programs. Both bands educate students through a variety of styles in jazz. These styles include swing, latin, and pop styles. The jazz program at both middle schools meets once a week during the school year. Students in grade seven and eight are accepted into the band by way of the audition process. Members must be in good standing within the concert band class. The Park Jazz band is directed by Mr. Ellis and the Terrill Jazz band is directed by Mr. Gillick.
HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ
Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School features four jazz bands.
JAZZ LAB (MONDAY) & (THURSDAY) - This band is open to all students and there is no audition for these bands. The lab band meets once a week and the students explore a variety of styles such big band swing, latin, and fusion jazz. Mr. Gillick is the director.
SPF JAZZ - The SPFHS Jazz Band is an award winning performing Jazz Band for all high school students. The band is a 1 credit course and all high school musicians can audition as well as students in the 8th grade jazz band at Park or Terrill Middle Schools. Students must have a commitment to rehearsals and all programs. Mr. Ellis is the director
MOONGLOWERS - The MOONGLOWERS is an award winning performing jazz band for all high school students. The MOONGLOWERS are New Jersey's oldest school jazz band and they have been state champs for many years. The band is a 2 credit course and all high school musicians can audition as well as students in the 8th grade jazz band at Park or Terrill Middle Schools. Auditions are held at the beginning of each school year or in June of the previous school year. Minimum requirements for the Moonglowers are to be proficient on their instrument, willing to perform all styles of Jazz, and a commitment to rehearsals and all programs. Mr. Thomas is the director.
