PTA Council’s Safety Committee serves as a
forum for the exchange of concerns affecting the safety of children
in our public schools. Members of this committee include the
designated District Safety chairperson, each SPF public school’s
PTA Safety chairperson (or his/her delegate), and a representative
from the Scotch Plains and Fanwood police departments. Committee
members share information with respect to PTA-sponsored and
police-supported safety activities taking place within our schools.
The Committee also meets once or twice a year to review current
safety concerns, including traffic concerns. The Committee chair
reports to the PTA Council.
One recent initiative conducted by an ad
hoc committee of members of the Safety Committee and PTA presidents
was a district-wide safety survey of parents, school staff, and high
school students. Individual summaries of the survey results from
each of the elementary and middle schools and an accompanying
overview of those results were prepared and delivered to our
district superintendent in April 2002.
The following month, the ad hoc committee
submitted a set of school safety recommendations specific to the
district’s elementary and middle schools and the high school.
These recommendations were drawn from input received from
approximately 600 elementary school parents, 100 middle school
parents, more than 100 high school parents, and more than 925 high
school students. The
recommendations covered such areas as student conduct/behavioral
expectations; student supervision at arrival time, during
lunch/recess, and at dismissal time; bus conduct; student support
services; building security; traffic; and emergency procedures.
In June 2003, the committee submitted a review of the
progress the district has made in the area of safety in our schools.
This review included a list of safety/security improvements
recommended by the committee for implementation during the 2003-2004
school year.
