The elementary schools
emphasize the development of strong communication
and computation skills through a basic program of
reading, language arts including process writing,
mathematics, science, and social studies. Classes
in art, vocal and instrumental music, physical
education, and health (including chemical
dependency and family life education) are taught by
specialists in those subjects. Instruction in the
use and application of computers is integrated into
the content areas. A library/media program,
designed to teach children study and research
skills, is also fully integrated into all
curriculum areas. "Reading Recovery," an early
intervention program for students least ready to
learn to read, is available in each
building.
Middle School
Program
Two middle schools will
serve approximately 1,550 students in Grades 5
through 8. Grades 5 & 6 function as a "school
within a school" in identified areas of each middle
school. Separate extracurricular activities are
offered to students in these grades.
All students have a basic
program of English, mathematics, science, and
social studies: 5th grade is in self-contained
elementary classes, 6th and 7th grades use a
team-teaching format, and 8th grade uses a
departmental approach. All students participate in
the information technologies program that
integrates computer instruction with the content
areas, in physical education and health, and are
encouraged to participate in the world language
program (French, German, Italian, Spanish). A
variety of electives is available to students in
Grades 6-8.
