Introduction
The Scholarship Foundation will consider
applications for the scholarship awards listed
below as well as for any additional awards which
the Foundation may be requested to administer prior
to screening time. Scotch Plains and Fanwood
residents who are secondary school seniors and
graduates and who have applied to recognized
post-high school institutions of learning including
four-year colleges, two-year colleges, business,
technical, or vocational schools, are urged to
apply for scholarships assistance.
Application
forms are available at the SPFHS Department of
Counseling Services or may be downloaded from this
site.
Transcript
requests must be received in the Counseling Office
by February 11, 2010.

Instructions
1. Along with your completed application,
please submit a personal letter explaining why you
are applying for scholarship assistance and your
plans for the future. Please include your
goals, interests, and hobbies, and, if you are
applying for a scholarship that is based on
financial need, please include special family
circumstances (i.e. unusual medical expenses,
illness, job loss, etc.) or other pertinent
information that will support your application.
2. If you are a college-bound high school
student, your application must be supplemented
by a transcript of your school record including
your SAT scores. You must request your
Counseling Office to forward a copy of your
transcript to the person designated below. In
addition, please request a teacher or another
adult to write a letter of reference for you
and mail as directed.
3. If you are a college student, please
include both a high school and a college
transcript. You are responsible for
requesting that these forms be sent to the person
designated below.
4. Please include, but do not staple to your
application, two pictures which may be
suitable for a publicity release.
5. NOTE: You may be contacted by a
representative of the Scholarship Committee
regarding your financial aid package prior to final

ROBERT
ADAMS, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship fund was established by the Adams
family in memory of Robert Adams, Jr. a former
teacher and principal at SPFHS. The first award of
$500 was given in 1995. The recipient of the award
shall be a graduating senior from Scotch
Plains-Fanwood High School who has excelled in
mathematics during his/her four years of high
school and who plans to pursue mathematics as a
career. If there are several worthy candidates,
preference will be given to the student intending
to pursue teaching as a career. The award for is
planned to be $1,500.
ELIZABETH
C. BECKER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship was established in 1974 by Miss
Becker after 47 years of teaching in the Scotch
Plains-Fanwood school district. It is to be given
to a graduating senior who is a resident of Scotch
Plains or Fanwood and who has at some time been a
pupil in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood school system.
The $1,500 award is to be given to a student
entering the field of education.
JOYCE
& LEONARD BERGMAN MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship which was established in 1983
is given by friends and family in memory and in
honor of an outstanding elementary school teacher
and her husband. To be eligible, a student must
have attended School One. The award will be
$1,500.
BESSON
FAMILY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships were established in 1992 by Dr.
Frank Besson to recognize a local male and a local
female student who exhibit potential for success,
who have a financial need, and who will be
attending a four-year program. The amount of each
scholarship is $1,000.
JEANNETTE
BRITTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Jeannette Britton Memorial Scholarship was
established in 1988 and is given by family and
friends in memory of Jeannette Britton, a teacher
at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School for more than
25 years before her death in 1988. The scholarship
is open to a student graduating from SPFHS who has
excelled in the study of Spanish. Last year the
award was $1,500.
GEORGE
BRYAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The George Bryan Memorial Scholarship
was begun in 2002 with a fund established by the
family of George Bryan who was a former member of
the Counseling Department at SPFHS. The recipient
of this award is to be a student who has overcome
adversity during his or her high school career at
SPFHS. A $1,000 award will be given with the
selection of the student being made by the
Counseling Department which maintains a plaque
containing the names of all recipients of this
honor.
DOLLARS
FOR STUDENTS SCHOLARSHIPS
Funding of these awards comes from
mailings within our communities, the annual
"Dollars for Students" house to house canvas, and
from interest generated by the Foundation's
invested funds. Recipient considerations include
scholarship, character, need, self-help, and
community and school service. Fanwood and Scotch
Plains graduating seniors and undergraduate college
students may apply for these awards. Last year
scholarships were awarded with a combined total of
$38,000.
DONNA
J. DOREMUS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Donna J.
Doremus Memorial Scholarship was established in
2008 to honor the memory of Donna who was a devoted
wife and mom who died at the age of 52 following a
courageous 10-year battle with breast cancer. It is
open to a graduating senior from SPFHS who plans to
attend a 4-year accredited college or university
and who has maintained a 3.0 GPA. The awardee does
not have to demonstrate financial need. Preference
will be given to a student who has been an active
member of Relay for Life and/or the Student
Movement Against Cancer. The award is to be given
in the amount of $1,956.
If you wish to be
considered for the scholarship, it is requested
that a statement be included in your personal
letter that accompanies the application indicating
if you have been personally touched by cancer in
your own life or through a family member or a
friend. The applicant should include any advice
that might be offered to help make life easier or
better while dealing with cancer.
MOUNTAINSIDE
ELKS LODGE #1585 SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships are given by the B.P.O.E. of Route
22 East Mountainside to recognize academic
achievement, need, community service, and potential
for college success although not necessarily in
that order. Awards are limited to graduating
seniors. One $500 scholarship is planned.
DR.
GEORGE ESPOSITO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship fund was established in 1995 by
the family of George Esposito who was a former
business teacher and tennis coach at SPFHS. It
continues to be given to a graduating senior of
SPFHS pursuing a career in business education or
medicine. The award is $500.
KAREN
& JOSEPH FRANZONE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship
was established in 2000 and first presented in 2001
to honor the memory of Karen E. Franzone who
touched the lives of many people in our communities
as a daughter, a wife, a mother, a sister, an aunt,
a teacher and a friend. Following his untimely
death in May 2006, Joseph Franzone, Sr.'s name was
added to the scholarship. A $1,000 scholarship is
to be given each year to a graduating senior from
Scotch Plains or Fanwood who is pursuing a degree
in teaching from an accredited 4-year college. The
student may be one who has overcome a learning
disability. The awardee does not have to
demonstrate financial self help.
FRIDAY'S
PLACE SCHOLARSHIP
The Friday's Place
Scholarship was established in 2001 to celebrate
the 10th anniversary of providing a social night
for 7th and 8th grade students who live in Scotch
Plains or Fanwood. The $1,000 award is to be given
to a graduating high school senior who is a
resident of Fanwood or Scotch Plains, who is well
rounded and who has demonstrated academic success
along with community service.
DORIS
KOUES MEMORIAL NURSING SCHOLARSHIP
The Doris Koues Memorial Nursing Scholarship was
established in 1995 by Alice Schiller in memory of
and to honor her friend who was a resident of
Scotch Plains and a graduate of the Elizabeth
General Hospital School of Nursing. The recipient
must be planning to enter the nursing profession.
The award is planned for $500.
WILLIAM
& RUTH LINGE SCHOLARSHIPS
The William &
Ruth Linge Scholarship fund was established in 2006
through a gift to the Scholarship Foundation from
the estate of Ruth Linge who was a resident of
Scotch Plains for 39 years and who died in December
2004. Two $3,000 scholarships are planned to be
awarded to a male & a female applicant who are
graduating seniors from SPFHS and who excel in the
study of foreign languages. Applicants must include
a letter from a foreign language
instructor.
JOHN
& MARIE LOSAVIO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Marie Losavio Memorial Scholarship
was established in 1999 by the Losavio family to
honor the memory of Mrs. Losavio who graduated with
a master's degree from the Juilliard School of
Music in New York City. She was a lead soprano and
earned distinction throughout New York and New
Jersey. In addition, she was the recipient of many
awards and received significant recognition for her
talent and for sharing her gift. In 2005, the name
of the scholarship was changed to include John
Losavio who was a dynamic member of the Scotch
Plains Business District, having purchased a
butcher shop on Park Avenue and renaming it John's
Meat Market, and maintaining it for 65 years.
This family-owned establishment continues to be
an anchor for the downtown business community and
is the oldest surviving store in the Township. The
award is to be given to a high school senior who is
a resident of Scotch Plains and who plans to major
in music at a school of higher education.
Considerations will include character and a good
scholastic record. A $500 award is planned.
DEBORAH
ANN MAINS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Deborah Ann Mains Memorial
Scholarship was established by her family in 2006
following her untimely death in August of that
year. One scholarship is to be awarded to an
applicant with financial need who is a graduating
senior from SPFHS, who has a strong scholastic
record, who is involved in extracurricular
activities, and who has a love of life with
compassion & empathy for people. The award is
planned to be given in the amount of $2,000.
COURTNEY
E. METZGER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship
was established in 2000 and first presented in 2001
to honor the memory of this vivacious and caring
young woman who was a member of the SPFHS Class of
1998, and, at the time of her death in a traffic
accident, in her junior year at Northeastern
University. The $2,500 award is to be given to a
graduating female student from SPFHS who has
participated in soccer during high school. If you
feel that you qualify for this award, please
include a brief statement in your letter to the
Foundation that you think best describes you as an
individual.
JAMES
O'HARA POWERS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The James O'Hara Powers Memorial Scholarships was
established in 1998 by friends of James Powers who
at his untimely death at age 34 was serving as a
substitute teacher and assistant coach at Scotch
Plains-Fanwood High School. They are given in
memory of a young man who had the ability to relate
to students on their level in a positive and
supportive manner. The recipients of the two $1,000
scholarships are to be a male and a female senior
graduating from SPFHS who are varsity letter
achievers and who have demonstrated enthusiasm and
dedication to a team on which he or she has
actively participated.
DR.
MURIEL H. RAMSDEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In April 1991, Dr. Muriel H. Ramsden
established a scholarship fund in her name and
stipulated that the earnings from it were only to
be given beginning the year following her death.
Dr. Ramsden, who was a former member of the SP-F
Board of Education and a 20-year member of the
Board of Trustees of the SP-F Scholarship
Foundation, died on July 24, 2005. Dr. Ramsden
stipulated that the award is to be given to a
female graduate of SPFHS who intends to major in
the sciences with a preference to be given to a
student intending to pursue a career in chemistry.
The award is planned to be $1,500.
DR. TERRY
K. RIEGEL SCHOLARSHIP
The Riegel Fund was established in 1998 by Dr.
Terry K. Riegel upon his retirement after 27 years
as the principal of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High
School. The scholarship is to be given annually to
a graduating senior from SPFHS who has shown
potential and promise for success in post high
school education. A $2,500 award is planned.
OLGA B.
ROSS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The Olga B. Ross Memorial Scholarships
have been established by the SP-F Scholarship
Foundation as the result of a bequest of over
$31,000 from her estate to the Foundation. Mrs.
Ross died on January 9, 2004, as a result of a
tragic fire in her home, which was located on
Terrill Road in Plainfield. Two $2,000 awards are
planned with one going to a graduating senior from
SPFHS and one going to a former graduate currently
in undergraduate school. Recipient considerations
include scholarship, character, need, self-help,
and community & school service.
ROTARY-GARBE
FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The Rotary-Garbe Foundation, an adjunct
of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Rotary Club, offers
scholarships to local residents who are seniors at
our local high schools or undergraduate college
students. The awards will be based on high moral
character, leadership qualities, successful
scholarship capabilities, financial need, and
acceptance at a two or four-year college or
vocational school. Last year there were twenty
awards totaling $20,000. The Foundation will also
present a $750 scholarships to the valedictorian
and a $500 scholarship to the salutatorian. As long
as a student maintains a high academic standing in
college, the $1,000 award will continue for 4
years.
RICHARD
A. SCHAIBLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A scholarship has been established to honor the
memory of Richard A. Schaible who was a mechanic
for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education
who died on November 18, 2009. It is to be
presented to a graduating senior from SPFHS who
will be entering a vocational or trade school to
further his or her education. The award is planned
to be in the amount of $1,000 and will be given for
the 1st time in 2010.
FANWOOD-SCOTCH
PLAINS SERVICE LEAGUE SCHOLARSHIPS
The Service League Scholarships, established in
1975, are offered to graduating seniors from Scotch
Plains-Fanwood High School and Union Catholic High
School who are residents of Fanwood or Scotch
Plains. Scholarship monies are also available to
students from Fanwood and Scotch Plains who are
already attending college or vocational school.
These scholarships are renewable by providing an
updated application and grade transcripts.
The awards are given with emphasis on the
applicant's involvement in community activities and
service organizations, character, and financial
need. The scholarships are not necessarily based on
scholastic achievement. "B" and "C" students should
also apply. Applications are screened by the
Scholarship Committee of the Service League. In
2009, $12,000 was awarded to college students. The
final amount for 2010 will be announced in the
Spring.
STUDENT
MOVEMENT AGAINST CANCER - ROBERT MATTAR
SCHOLARSHIPS
The Student Movement Against Cancer -
Robert Mattar Scholarships were established in 2004
to be presented for the first time to graduating
members of the SPFHS Class of 2005. They are
sponsored by the Student Movement Against Cancer,
and the awards are to be given to two students who
have similar dedication and determination as was
inspired by Rob Mattar when he was touched by
cancer. SMAC is an organization that raises money
to help find a cure for cancer, and to that end, it
is hoped to reward others who have similar goals.
The recipients of these scholarships do not have to
demonstrate financial need.
It is requested that a statement be included
in the personal letter that accompanies the
application indicating involvement in either
community service that helps in fund-raising for
any cancer related charity, or in the caring for a
cancer patient, or if the applicant has been
touched by cancer in their own life or through a
family member or friend. The applicant should
include an explanation of the affect of this
activity or relationship and if something positive
has been gained through such a difficult situation.
Two awards of $1,000 are planned.
JAMES
R. SOCHAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The James R. Sochan Memorial Scholarship
Fund was established in 2002 as a result of a
bequest from the estate of Mr. Sochan who died in
February of that year. He had been a teacher and a
coach at SPFHS for many years. The $500 award will
be given to a needy and worthy graduating senior
from SPFHS.
RALPH
SORRENTINO MEMORIAL WRESTLING SCHOLARSHIP
The Ralph Sorrentino Memorial Wrestling
Scholarship was established by his family in 2004
to honor the memory of Ralph who was a varsity
wrestler and a graduate of SPFHS. The $1,000 award
is to be given to a graduating senior who is a
resident Fanwood or Scotch Plains, who has
participated in a wrestling program on a varsity
level as a senior, and who has shown outstanding
skill or dedication to the sport. The recipient
must also have demonstrated the quality of good
citizenship while in high school. This award may be
based on need.
FRANKLIN
MAINE SPOONER & HELEN McCONNELL SPOONER
SCHOLARSHIP
The Franklin Maine Spooner & Helen
McConnell Spooner Scholarship was established by
Helen Spooner prior to her death in 2002. A $2,000
award is to be given each year to a graduating
female student from SPFHS who will be majoring in
one of the basic sciences including physics,
chemistry, botany or biology, or in a field of
engineering.
JEFFREY
SPRING MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship was established in 1995 by the
family and friends of Jeff Spring, and it is given
in memory of a dynamic educator and coach who
deeply touched the lives of all who knew him. Mr.
Spring taught mathematics at Scotch Plains-Fanwood
High School. While academic excellence, involvement
in school activities, and financial need will be
considered, motivation and progress will be the
determining factors in the selection process. The
recipient will be a resident of Fanwood or Scotch
Plains and a graduating senior of SPFHS or Union
Catholic High School. A $1,500 award is
planned.
CARL
A. SWENSON, JR. MEMORIAL BOY SCOUTING
SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship
was established by the family of Carl A. Swenson,
Jr. to honor the memory of a dynamic life-long
member of the scouting community who died suddenly
in March of 2006. The $5,000 award was presented
for the first time in 2008 to a graduating high
school senior from Fanwood or Scotch Plains who has
been active in Boy Scouting. The scholarship will
be based on merit and will be given to a young man
who has earned the rank of Star, Life, or Eagle.
Preference will be given to a scout from Troop 33
sponsored by Fanwood Presbyterian Church that is
the troop where for many years Carl served as
Committee Chairman.
PERRY H.
TYSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Perry H. Tyson Memorial Scholarship is given
from a fund established by the late former Fanwood
resident & Scotch Plains realtor, Henry
Schwiering. It is to be given each year to a senior
graduating from SPFHS. Scholastic record will not
be the most important criteria as the Screening
Committee will carefully consider the need for
financial assistance, effort and improvement during
the high school years, and motivation and desire
for continuing education. The amount of the
scholarship is $1,500.
MANYA S.
UNGAR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Manya S. Ungar Memorial Scholarship fund was
established in 2003 by family and friends to honor
the life of a dynamic activist for the welfare and
the education of young people beginning on a local
level and broadening to a national platform. Her
interest in education encompassed both the academic
arena and the cultural arts. An annual award of
$1,000 will be given to an SPFHS graduating senior
residing in Scotch Plains or Fanwood who is
planning to further his or her education in pursuit
of a career in music, drama, or the arts.
GEORGE
VOGET MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The George Voget Memorial Scholarships were
established in 1999 by the family of George Voget
following his untimely death in 1998 at age 50. Mr.
Voget was a member of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood
High School Class of 1965 who, when asked to list
the top ten significant accomplishments in his
life, named his position as the quarterback of the
SPFHS varsity football team as number one. He was
also a member of the varsity baseball team and was
named a Scholar Athlete in 1965. The recipients of
these two $500 awards are to be a male and a female
senior graduating from SPFHS who have excelled in
both academics and athletics with an enthusiasm
honoring the memory of George Voget. Financial need
will not necessarily be a determining factor in the
selection of the recipients.
JOHANNA
WILK MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship
was established by the Johanna Wilk Foundation to
recognize academic excellence and achievement and
to provide financial assistance to a graduating
SPFHS senior in pursuit of a college degree.
Financial need will be a consideration. While not
necessarily the deciding factor in the selection of
the recipient, persons with an interest in science,
medicine, research, or community service should
note this interest when applying. One scholarship
of $2,500 is planned for an SPFHS graduating senior
and one $2,500 scholarship is planned for a Union
Catholic graduating senior.
JIM
AND GAIL WILLIAMS SCHOLARSHIP
The Jim and Gail
Williams scholarship was established in 2009 to
honor two former teachers from Park Middle School.
It is funded by members of our teaching staff,and
it is to be given to a graduating senior who
attended Park Middle School and who is interested
in pursuing a career in education. The award is
planned to be given in the amount of
$500.
PARENT-TEACHER
ASSOCIATION SPONSORED SCHOLARSHIPS
BRUNNER
PTA SCHOLARSHIP & DR. ALBERT DeSOUSA MEMORIAL
SCHOLARSHIP
These two $1,000 scholarships are
planned to be given by the Brunner School PTA to
students who have attended Brunner School. One of
them will be given to honor the memory of Dr.
Albert DeSousa who was a former principal of
Brunner School.
EVERGREEN
PTA DR. BEVERLEE KAMINETZKY SCHOLARSHIP, THE KEHS -
AAKJER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, AND THE CHICKIE GIRAUD
MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
The first two $1,000 scholarships are given by
Evergreen PTA and friends to honor former
principals Dr. Beverlee Kaminetzky, Mr. Kehs, and
Mr. Aakjer. To be eligible, a student must be a
graduating high school senior who has received some
part of his or her primary education at Evergreen
School.
The Chickie Giraud Memorial $1,000 Scholarship
was established to honor the memory of Mrs. Giraud
who was employed as a staff member at Evergreen
Elementary School for 15 years until becoming ill
with leukemia. The Evergreen administration,
faculty, staff, and PTA wish to remember Mrs.
Giraud for her dedication to children and for
making Evergreen School a better place for all.
The scholarship will be awarded to a former
Evergreen student who is a graduating senior from
SPFHS meeting the following criteria: must be an
alumnus of Evergreen seeking to continue their
education in an accredited post secondary
institution (technical, trade, college, university)
and, if possible, priority will be given to a
student who during their school career received
assistance from the Department of Special
Services.

ACKERMAN COLES CARL M. KUMPF PTA
SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships are given by the J. Ackerman
Coles PTA to honor their former principal, Carl M.
Kumpf, who retired in 2001. They are to be given to
graduating high school seniors who attended Coles
School for some part of his/her primary education.
Two $1,000 awards are planned.
McGINN
PTA MARIANA CASSIDY EXCELLENCE
AWARDS
These two $1,000 scholarships have been named in
honor of Ms. Mariana Cassidy who served as the
principal of McGinn School for 12 successful years.
The scholarships will be given to two graduating
high school seniors (a male and a female) who have
demonstrated a dedication to academic excellence
and social service in their high school careers
with the same dedication and high standards the Ms.
Cassidy devoted to the students during her tenure
as McGinn's principal. A minimum of 3 years of
attendance at McGinn School is also required.
PARK
MIDDLE SCHOOL McTB SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships will be given by Park
Middle School PTA to a male and a female student
who have attended Park Middle School for three
years. The awards are planned to be $500 and will
be given to graduating high school seniors based on
need and motivation for academic success.
PTA
COUNCIL MANYA S. UNGAR & DR. CAROL B. CHOYE
SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships are given by the combined PTAs of
the Scotch Plains-Fanwood School System to
graduating seniors of SPFHS to honor Manya S. Ungar
who was a past President of the National Parent
Teacher Association and Dr. Carol B. Choye who
retired as Superintendent of Schools in 2006. Three
$1,000 scholarships are planned to be given.
Consideration for the Dr. Choye scholarship
include: must have been a student of the SP-F
School District for all 13 years of the education
(K-12), must have participated in some form of the
arts during high school, must have demonstrated an
active participation in some form of community
service, must have financial need, and must have
future plans including teaching or education
(preferred, but not mandatory).
SCHOOL
ONE PTA JAMES V. CERASA SCHOLARSHIP
The scholarship is given by School One PTA to honor
former principal, James V. Cerasa. To be eligible,
a student must be a graduating high school senior
who has received the majority of his or her
elementary education at School One. An $1,000 award
is planned.
SPFHS
PTA ROBERT ADAMS, JR. & DR. TERRY K. RIEGEL
SCHOLARSHIPS
Former high school principal, Robert J. Adams,Jr.,
was actively involved in SPFHS and truly dedicated
to the students. Dr. Terry K. Riegel served as the
principal of SPFHS for 27 years. These scholarships
are given by the high school PTA seeking to
recognize graduating seniors of SPFHS who have
demonstrated school spirit through involvement
and/or support of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School
activities. Financial need is not necessarily a
criteria for these two $1,000 scholarships.
TERRILL
MIDDLE SCHOOL PTA JOHN C. FOULKS
SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships will be given by Terrill Middle
School PTA to honor former principal, John C.
Foulks, who retired in 2003. They will be given to
students who attended Terrill Middle School for
three years. The awards will be given to graduating
high school seniors based on motivation for
academic success. Two $1,000 awards will be
given.
