The Students Obtaining Success (SOS) program is
a supplemental support program provided to first
through fourth grade students in reading,
mathematics, and writing. A teacher checklist is
used for placement into the program in first grade.
The locally developed first grade assessment is
used for placement in grade two. The NJ Proficiency
Assessment of State Standards (NJ PASS) is used for
placement in grade three. Placement in grade four
is determined by the results of the NJ Assessment
of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) at grade
three.
The SOS program utilizes small group instruction
and/or in-class support, depending on the needs of
the students' and the teachers' schedules. Teachers
meet with the students a minimum of two periods per
week. When there is room in the program, the Basic
Skills teachers also work with marginal students,
and often these students have shown the greatest
growth from supplemental instruction.
The SOS instructors monitor the progress of the
students in the program. An ISIP (Individual
Student Improvement Plan) is developed for each
student and serves as the instructional guide.
Pre/post test information is collected on the
students and used to assess both student and
program gains.
A Family Math program is being offered to all
fourth grade basic skills students and their
families. Family Math is a nationally recognized
program for parents and children to learn math
activities together in an enjoyable,
non-threatening atmosphere. The teaching emphasis
is on the "doing of mathematics." Inexpensive
materials of all kinds: beans, blocks, toothpicks,
and coins are used to help students solve math
problems. Topics include numerical operations,
geometry, probability and statistics, measurement,
patterns, estimations, use of calculators, logical
thinking, and careers.
