The resource center program provides small group
instruction for students who are enrolled in
typical classes. Although all children learn by
individual styles and at widely varying rates,
resource center students have been identified and
classified by the child study team as having
specific learning disabilities which interfere with
learning. The resource center program is designed
to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs
of students in the areas which cannot be met in the
regular class setting.
The resource center program provides classified
students with learning skills, strategies, and/or
attitudes that will enable them to develop and
improve their educational competencies. Students
with deficits which preclude their ability to
benefit from instruction in mainstream subjects can
be provided with assistance in these ways. Many
students are supported by special education
teachers in mainstream classes through team
teaching. Special education teachers may provide
instruction in lieu of the mainstream program.
Other students are given instructional strategies
in the resource center which facilitate achievement
in mainstream classes.
Instructional responsibility for a resource
center student is shared between the resource
center and the general education teachers. If a
resource center student is having difficulty
achieving success in a general education class, the
resource center and the regular class teacher
collaborate to implement the appropriate curricular
or instructional accommodations and/or
modifications.
