The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public School System
is committed to providing learning opportunities
which will stimulate all children while
simultaneously meeting the unique needs of the
academically talented student.
All fourth grade students are re-evaluated using
multiple criteria for possible inclusion in the
gifted and talented program (TIB) as they enter the
middle school. The criteria include a parent and
teacher checklist, group ability test, and a review
of the NJ Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ
ASK) in fourth grade. The program is conducted
within the student's own school. Students meet by
grade level on a rotating schedule.
The TIB (Thinking is Basic) program is committed
to providing a curriculum which emphasizes the use
of thinking skills through independent and group
activities. These activities will prepare our
learners for meaningful participation in both the
classroom and community by valuing their
individuality, recognizing their skills, and
instilling in them an appreciation of their ability
to contribute to society.
Additionally, after school workshops/clubs will
be provided for all fifth grade students who
demonstrate a talent and/or interest in a variety
of areas (for example, Science Olympiad, Math
Club).
