#776 - Co-op Family and Consumer Sciences Work Experience Program - PM

Grades: 11-12

Level: 0

Year: 15X

Credits: 15

This is a work experience program open to 11th and 12th grade students. It is designed to serve those students who wish to work in a home economics related field such as nursery school aide or food service worker.

The program allows students to attend school for one-half of their day and to work "on-the-job" for the other half at a home economics related institution. Some students choose to attend school all day and work after school or evenings, and/or weekends (depending upon the employer's work schedule).

The student attends a Family/Consumer Sciences related class. This related class is required and is scheduled for 5 periods per week. In this class the work experience coordinator assists in the exploration of various home economics occupations. Areas covered include safety on the job, job interviews, sanitary job procedures, interpersonal relationships, etc.

The Family and Consumer Sciences class is scheduled five days per week of related instruction with ten periods per week in a student's schedule for the CO-OP Work Experience Program. The total number of periods taken is 15. The half-day work experience portion may be scheduled either in the morning (AM) or in the afternoon (PM). Job placement determines whether a student works mornings or afternoons.

Job placement is normally accomplished through the work experience coordinator. However, students may seek and gain employment on their own but the work station must be approved finally by the work coordinator if credit is to be earned and school time used.
