Pre-K Early
Childhood
Advisory Council
|
|
|
Parents of preschool students are encouraged to get
involved with the district's PreK Parent Council. This
organization helps support strong ties between the home and
school for all families participating in the district's
preschool programs. The Council has responsibility for
fundraising efforts and supports the district's preschool
programs by organizing special events and by publicizing the
program in the community. Representatives from the Council
also act as liaisons to the PTAs of each of the five
elementary schools.
If you are interested in
participating, be sure to attend the first Early
Childhood Advisory Council meeting held during the
Orientation week in September, usually on the Friday after
Labor Day. If you think you might have time to volunteer for
a leadership role on the Council, please be sure to contact
the PreK Office in July or August (after you receive your
child's registration packet).

September
Orientation
|
|
|
|
The school year begins with an hour-long conference and
orientation session. The student visits the classroom with a
parent or guardian and has the opportunity to play with a
small group of new classmates. The parents and guardians
have the opportunity to meet with the teacher to learn more
about the program and to ask questions as a group. There is
also a time to chat with the teacher one-on-one. This
orientation is designed to make the transition into the
program comfortable for both the parent and the child.

Weekly
Newsletters
|
|
|
|
Each week the PreK teacher sends home a newsletter that
offers families highlights from the week's classroom
activities and gives them suggestions for helping their
child build on newly developing skills at home. Parents are
asked to read this newsletter carefully each week for
information about upcoming events and items that their child
will need to bring to school.

Progress
Reports & Conferences
|
|
|
|
The teacher meets with the parents/guardians again in
November and in February to discuss the child's progress. At
the February conference, parents/guardians receive a
progress report showing various indicators of their child's
development. A final progress report is also sent home at
the end of the school year.

Home-School
Learning Kits
|
|
|
|
Each Fall and Spring, families are asked to spend some
time at home completing valuable learning activities with
their child. A variety of kits have been prepared by the
teachers; each one contains descriptions of activities and
all necessary materials. A feedback form is also included
for parents to comment on their own observations of their
child's skills and attitudes.

Participating
in Classroom Activities
|
|
|
|
Additionally, parents are often invited into the
classroom to share traditions or talents, to read to the
class and to participate on field trips. There may also be
opportunities to assist with the preparation of special
events or projects.
