The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public School System
is committed to providing learning opportunities
which will stimulate all children while
simultaneously meeting the unique needs of the
academically talented student.
Fifth grade students are re-evaluated using
multiple criteria for possible inclusion in the
gifted and talented program (TIB). The criteria
include a parent and teacher checklist, group
ability test, the district standardized test, and a
review of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and
Knowledge (NJ ASK 4).
The pull-out program is conducted within the
student's own school. Students meet by grade level
on a rotating schedule.
The TIB (Thinking is Basic) Program is committed
to providing a curriculum which emphasizes the use
of thinking skills through independent and group
activities. These activities will prepare our
learners for meaningful participation in both the
classroom and community by valuing their
individuality, recognizing their skills, and
instilling in them an appreciation of their ability
to contribute to society.
Students participate each year in convocation
experiences with identified students from both
middle schools and with students in similar
programs from surrounding
communities.
