The middle school reading program is designed to
foster a love of reading and to develop the skills
basic to a lifetime of effective reading. The
program encompasses learning experiences in
listening, word identification, vocabulary
development, comprehension, critical thinking,
literary analysis, making predictions, and study
skills.
Within the implementation phase of the reading
program, teachers apply literary strategies and use
approaches to reading which integrate listening,
speaking, reading, and writing activities to
enhance student comprehension of and appreciation
for varied literary genre. Teachers model oral
reading skills through designated books which are
read aloud to students. Full length literary pieces
supplement the basal component of the program.
Students practice reading in SSR (Silent Sustained
Reading) opportunities encouraging extensive
individualized independent readings.
Each young reader will develop skills and
appreciation for the value of reading as a key to
unlock worlds real and imaginary and to participate
richly in a life enhanced by literacy.
GRADE 6 -
Developmental Reading (Year / 5 x week)
The reading program provides reinforcement and
extension of the basic skills needed in middle
school. Emphasis is placed on the study skills
needed for content learning. A practical approach
of how to study and how to prepare for tests is
undertaken. Students experience reading a variety
of literary genre as an essential part of the
program. Listening skills comprise an essential
part of the program.
Other skills developed in the program are: word
attack skills, vocabulary comprehension skills,
study skills, and library skills. The habit of
independent reading is a basic component of
building a strong reader. During the year, each
student is required to read independently on a
daily basis. Recreational reading is encouraged
throughout the summer, and a book list is given to
each student.
GRADE 7 -
Reading Workshop (9 weeks / 5 x week)
In grade 7, a nine week reading workshop is
required of all students. This workshop will
reinforce the reading which is required in the
language arts class and engage students in
experiences designed to develop and refine higher
level critical thinking and literary analysis.
