Dear Terrill Parents / Guardians,

It is with mixed emotions that I write to inform you that Mrs. Jones, the Terrill Middle nurse, will be leaving us effective October 30, 2009 to begin her retirement.  Although we will truly miss Mrs. Jones, the Terrill school community wishes her health and happiness during her retirement.  Mrs. Jones has dedicated herself to providing the students of Terrill with outstanding care for over 25 years.

As Mrs. Jones prepares to depart Terrill for a new adventure, we warmly welcome Ms. Margaret Potter as the new Terrill nurse.  For 20+ years, Ms. Potter has served the Scotch Plains – Fanwood students as the nurse assigned to the high school.  We are confident that her strong nursing background, coupled with high regard for health and student welfare will serve the students of Terrill well.

If you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards on behalf of the staff of Terrill Middle School,

Kevin Holloway
Principal

Dear Terrill School Community,

February is celebrated as Black History Month all over the nation. Terrill Middle School would like to offer a meaningful opportunity for our students and caring members of the school community to talk about historical moments and memories in Black History during the last week of February.

Mr. Holloway and I are looking for twelve Terrill grandparents, parents, and family members who would be willing to share their personal insights and experiences with Social Studies classes in a planned interview setting.  Sample questions might include:

•How has school changed for African American students over your lifetime?

•Who were inspirational African American people in your lifetime and why?

•Did you attend the historical march on Washington with Martin Luther King in 1963?  If yes, how was that experience for you?

•How does the election of Barack Obama as the first African American U.S. President affect you personally?

•In your opinion, what are the important events and moments in Black History that Terrill students should know about?

•What hopes and dreams do you have for all Terrill students?

If you would like to nominate a member of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood community or if you would like to participate in this Terrill School Roundtable, please return the response form (pdf) to Mrs. Richards in the Main Office by Monday, February 2, 2009.

I welcome any questions or suggestions you might have regarding the educational and cultural goals of the Black History roundtable. Please feel free to contact me via email or phone: krichards@spfk12.org or 908-322-5215.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Kimberly Richards

Assistant Principal

Dear Terrill Middle School Families,

January is Math Mania Month at Terrill Middle School

Terrill will be emphasizing the importance of math during this month.  Math teachers will be offering a challenge math question in their classes once a week. Math teachers have written a math problem appropriate for each grade level. The results of the school-wide challenge will be tabulated and graphed by one of the 8th grade classes. Winning classes in each grade will score a special outdoor social during lunch – on a beautiful weather day!

The essential goals of this effort are two-fold:

1.Students will understand that everyday math skills are important for everyone

2.Math skills will assist students in all of life’s future successes

Parents and Families Can Participate in Math Mania!

Do you use math in your job or in your daily activities? You probably do! Help us teach Terrill students that fractions, decimals, algebra and all math skills can sneak out of math class and into their “real” lives!  Please take a minute to share when you use a calculator and when you use mental math and ask your child to figure out everyday problems. And of course, remember to be a POSITIVE role model for your child!

Extra Points for Your Child

Fill in a daily math log showing how YOU use mathematics in your world and send it in with your child to math class. These logs will score some extra points for their class!

See the attached Math Log Sheet!

Thanks for joining us in this endeavor in the New Year!
