Testing Dates 2018/2019
COGAT Grade 3 October 16, 17, and 18 PARCC Assessment Grade 3 & 4 April/May District Assessments Grades 1 & 2 May
The Scotch Plains-Fanwood School District has adopted and implemented forms of assessments to provide parents and teachers with a measure of our students' overall academic growth. There are three forms of assessments implemented in the elementary schools. PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness of College and Careers)—for third and fourth graders), CoGATS (Cognitive Abilities Test) - for third graders and a District-designed assessment for first and second-grade students.
The Cognitive Ability Test (COGAT) is administered to children in Grade 3 as a form to measure their learning potential.
The PARCC is designed to assess students' knowledge and skill levels in language arts literacy and mathematics. It is administered to children in Grades 3 and 4, and includes multiple choice and open-ended written responses.
The best way for students to prepare for test taking is to report to school refreshed after a good night's sleep and fortified by a well-balanced breakfast. Please reassure your children that you believe in their overall ability, achievement, and accomplishments. Your efforts to insure that your children will be able to function at their optimum level are very much appreciated.
Students in first and second grade will be assessed each spring through the use of an assessment instrument developed by our District's teachers. The testing procedures occur as part of everyday instruction and take place in small time segments based upon the discretion of the grade level. The language arts component is scheduled over a weekly time period, and the math component is implemented during a different week. In addition, all students have the opportunity to read orally in a one-on-one situation with their classroom teacher using the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). The objective of the testing program is to provide useful information about our students' achievement and ability. A copy of all students' test scores are mailed directly homel.
