Course Name: Health IV - Life Cycles & Drug/Alcohol Education (H8442)

Course Description:

The Grade 12 Health Education course is designed to give students the opportunity to examine the impact that decisions and behaviors can have on lifetime wellness. Students will analyze factors that both support and hinder the achievement of personal health goals throughout the stages of life. Students will examine their personal efforts on preventing and controlling disease and health conditions and will examine the available prevention and treatment options for disease control. The curriculum is also designed to give students the ability to analyze the consequences of commonly abused drugs and the effect that drug abuse has on both the individual and the community. Through skills-based activities, students will not only understand the short-term and long-term effects of various drugs, but they will also gain an understanding of dependency, addiction, and the treatment process. Students will be able to discuss the consequences of sexual activity as well as the responsibility of being sexually active. Grade 12 students will examine the stages of pregnancy and the decisions, options, and considerations that should be taken into account when family planning. In this course, students will also explain the impacts that decisions and lifestyle choices can have on both the individual and others. Students will gain an understanding of their rights and responsibilities relating to health. In order to achieve these goals, the course will be guided by both the New Jersey Student Learning Standards and the National Standards for Health Education.

Personal Growth and Development

  1. Predict how healthy and unhealthy behaviors can affect brain development and impact physical, social, and emotional stages of early adulthood. 2.1.12.PGD.2
  2. Recognize one’s personal traits, strengths, and limitations and identify how to develop skills to support a healthy lifestyle. 2.1.12.EH.1

Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs

  1. Analyze personal choices and behaviors related to substance use and misuse to determine if they align with personal values and beliefs. 2.3.12.DSDT.2
  2. Utilize peer support and societal norms to formulate a health-enhancing message to remain drug-free. 2.3.12.DSDT.4
  3. Examine the influences of drug use and misuse on an individual’s social, emotional, and mental wellness. 2.3.12.ATD.1
  4. Compare and contrast the incidence and impact of commonly abused substances on individuals and communities in the United States and other countries. 2.3.ATD.2
  5. Explore the relationships between individuals who abuse alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs with an increase in intentional and unintentional health-risk behaviors. 2.3.12.ATD.3
  6. Evaluate the effectiveness of various strategies and skills that support an individual’s ability to stop misusing and abusing drugs and remain drug-free. 2.3.12.DSDT.5

Social and Sexual Health

  1. List the major milestones of each trimester of fetal development utilizing medically accurate information and analyze the factors that can impact the health of a baby. 2.1.12.PP.4; 2.1.12.PP.5.
  2. Analyze personal and societal factors that can influence decisions about pregnancy options, including parenting, abortion, safe haven, and adoption. 2.1.12.PP.6
  3. Analyze the emotional, social, physical, and financial effects of being a teen or young adult parent. 2.1.12.PP.7.
  4. Assess the skills needed to be an effective parent and evaluate parenting strategies used at various stages of child development based on reliable sources of information. 2.1.12.PP.8; 2.1.12.PP.9

 

Emotional Health

  1. Develop a health care plan that includes practices and strategies designed to support an active lifestyle, attend to mental health, and foster a healthy, social, and emotional life. 2.1.12.PGD.1

Personal Safety

  1. Identify strategies for getting help if one is the target of dating or domestic violence, as well as strategies that friends and family members of targets and abusers can employ. 2.3.12.PS.1; 2.3.12.PS.5
  2. Propose ways to reduce or prevent injuries and health problems related to unwanted or inappropriate sexual conduct. Discuss consent and the right to refuse sexual contact. 2.3.12.PS.1
  3. Compare and contrast situations and behaviors that may constitute as bullying, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, incest, rape, and dating violence. 2.3.12.PS.6

Community Health Services and Support

  1. Analyze a variety of health products and services based on cost, availability, accessibility, benefits, and accreditation in the home, school, and in the community. 2.1.12.CHSS.5
  2. Evaluate the validity of health information, resources, services in school, home, and in the community. 2.1.12.CHSS.6
  3. Investigate how individuals and local, state, and global agencies collaborate to address the health and social issues related to climate change. 2.1.12.CHSS.7; 2.1.12.CHSS.8
  4. Explain the purpose of the Safe Haven Law and identify locations in your community. 2.1.12.CHSS.3
  5. Identify medically accurate sources of information and local services that provide contraceptive methods and pregnancy options. 2.1.12.CHSS.4
