• Student Scheduling - Social Studies Department

    2014-15

All students, grades 6-11, are expected to complete the required scope and sequence program in social studies as approved by the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education.  See the course descriptions on this website or through school building guidance offices for more information.

The Social Studies Department considers student scheduling as a partnership between students, parents, teachers, counselors, and school administrators.

Placement and recommendation for courses follow a prescribed process.

Ninth grade students are recommended for Accelerated (#491), Academic (#492), or Standard (#493) United States History I.  Recommendations are based on three criteria:

    1. Average grades in social studies for 3rd/4th marking periods of 7th grade & 1st/2nd marking periods of 8th grade (33%)
    2. Teacher recommendation score on Department rubric (33%)
    3. Writing prompt score on Department assessment (33%) (Note: Department assessment will be administered in January, 2015 to all Park and Terrill 8th grade students)

Tenth and eleventh grade students are recommended for Accelerated (#481/#471), Academic (#482/#472), or Standard (#483/#473) United States History II and Global Perspectives respectively.  Recommendations are based on student performance in their current course.

Students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grade social studies classes are not recommended for levels since leveled courses are not offered.

High school students interested in taking social studies electives, beginning in 10th grade, do not have to meet any prerequisites to be eligible for exploratory or Advanced Placement courses.  See course descriptions on this website or visit the high school guidance department for more information about social studies elective courses.
