    AP U.S. Government & Politics:

This course provides a college-level, nonpartisan introduction to key political concepts, ideas, institutions, policies, interactions, roles, and behaviors that characterize the constitutional system and political culture of the United States. Through the study of foundational documents, Supreme Court decisions, and other texts and visuals, you will gain an understanding of the relationships and interactions among political institutions, processes, and behaviors. Throughout the course you will read and interpret data, make comparisons and applications, and develop evidence-based arguments. Should you choose to take the AP Test in May, you could earn college credit for a one-semester introductory college course in U.S. Government. (Check with your college - it’s usually Political Science 101.)

Class Guidelines were given to students on the first day of class. They can be found on Google Classroom or by clicking here.

    Global Perspectives:

Viewed from a contemporary lens, students explore their own identity as local, national, and global citizens, and they develop globally oriented perspectives to understand the various systems, processes, and forces that challenge the world today. This course investigates and compares political, economic, and cultural frameworks to better understand why and how people of the world live differently. Recognizing the various challenges existing in the world, students explore the causes, responses, and contexts of threats to global security, human rights, health, education, and the physical environment, while also appreciating the aesthetic value and natural beauty of our world. Electronic communication and performance-based assessment are primary vehicles for student expression of ideas and evaluation of their performance in this course.

Throughout the year you will learn basic concepts in general law as well as more specific topics. There are units on criminal law, tort law, consumer law, family law, and basic constitutional law. Throughout the year we will analyze several significant cases in American history. In addition to the work we do in class, you may also have the opportunity to go on a field trip to the Union County Courthouse in the spring.
